Chipboard and MDF are the two materials most often confused when having furniture made. Although both are wood-based boards, their production, durability and areas of use differ. Making the right choice directly affects the lifespan of your furniture.

What is chipboard?

Chipboard (particleboard) is made by bonding wood shavings and chips together with certain glues and chemicals and pressing them. Because its structure is looser and lower in density, its resistance to water, moisture and impact is limited. On the other hand, it is an economical material and is widely used for furniture in dry areas.

What is MDF?

MDF (medium-density fibreboard) is produced by pressing wood fibres under high pressure with glue and heat. Because its fibre structure is more homogeneous and dense:

  • It is more resistant to moisture, water, breakage and impact than chipboard.
  • Its edges and surface are smoother; it can be shaped with a router.
  • It is ideal for painted and profiled doors.

The painting question

Raw MDF and raw chipboard can both be painted; but thanks to its smooth surface, MDF gives a much better result. One of the questions our clients ask most often is: “Can I have my existing MDF cabinet painted?” If your cabinet is melamine-faced chipboard or melamine MDF, we’re sorry: these coated surfaces are not suitable for painting. Paint does not adhere to melamine and soon blisters and peels.

Architect’s note: In damp areas such as kitchens and bathrooms, choose moisture-resistant MDF (usually with a green core); well-sealed edge banding also stops water getting into the board.

Which should be used where?

  • Chipboard: cabinet carcasses in dry areas, shelves, budget solutions.
  • MDF: doors, painted surfaces, profiled details, furniture near damp areas.
  • Moisture-resistant MDF: kitchen and bathroom cabinets.

In many projects we balance budget and durability by using quality melamine board for carcasses and painted MDF for doors.

Frequently asked questions

Which is stronger, MDF or solid wood?

Solid wood is natural and long-lasting, but it can move with changes in humidity. MDF is more stable and easier to shape. The choice should depend on where it will be used.

How can I change the colour of a melamine-faced cabinet?

Instead of painting, replacing the doors or applying a suitable foil/wrap gives a better result.
