If you are pleased that you “got a granite worktop on the cheap”, unfortunately the real expense may only just be starting. Granite is not just a stone; it is a material that adds value through the quality of installation and its durability. And what determines the price is not just the pattern you see on the surface.
What determines the quality of granite?
- Density: A high-density stone is stronger and less porous.
- Water absorption: Low water absorption means resistance to stains and moisture problems.
- Cutting quality: Badly cut slabs cause problems at joints and edges.
- Polish: A quality polish protects the surface; a poor polish soon goes dull.
Low-priced granites are usually low in density. Over time this means cracks, dullness and water stains on the surface. In addition, in some cheap and heavily patterned granites, cracks and voids in the surface are filled with resin; these surfaces, flawless on day one, can lose their strength with use and heat.
Workmanship matters as much as the stone
Even a small workmanship error during installation makes a big difference: wrong measurements, poor joints, unsupported island overhangs, cracking at hob and sink cut-outs… That is why having the stone installed by the right craftsmen is one of the key factors that determine quality.
Look at lifespan, not price
The granite you bought cheaply may land you with expenses again a year later. When choosing stone, please look not at the price tag but at the lifespan of the material, and do your value-for-money analysis on that basis. In the long run, the right stone saves you both maintenance and replacement costs. For a comparison of different worktop materials, take a look at our article on choosing a kitchen worktop.
Frequently asked questions
Does a granite worktop stain?
Quality, properly sealed granite is very durable; low-density stones, on the other hand, absorb oil and water stains more easily. Applying a protective sealer once a year extends its life.
Is it bad if resin is used in granite?
Controlled resin treatment to stabilise natural cracks is an accepted method; but low-quality slabs “rescued” with heavy resin can cause problems in the long run. Ask the supplier for the technical specifications of the slab.
