Ceiling height is one of the most important factors determining whether a space feels airy or oppressive. The good news: even if the ceiling height doesn’t change, it is possible to manage how it is perceived with the right design decisions. Here are four basic rules for spaces with low ceilings.

1. A light-coloured ceiling

The first rule in low-ceilinged spaces is to keep the ceiling light. White and light tones reflect light and visually push the ceiling up. Keeping the walls in a light tone close to the ceiling softens the boundaries and strengthens the effect. We explained that painting the ceiling dark has the opposite effect in our article the visual effect of paint.

2. Create a vertical effect

Any detail that draws the eye upwards increases the sense of height:

  • Vertical battens and vertically textured wall panels
  • Long floor-to-ceiling curtains
  • Wardrobes and bookcases that reach the ceiling
  • Vertically shaped mirrors and artworks

3. The right lighting

Pendant lights are not recommended in low-ceilinged spaces; pendants that come close to eye level make the ceiling look lower than it is. Instead, fittings close to the ceiling that spread light, recessed spotlights or concealed lighting should be preferred. Wall lights that wash the wall upwards also make the ceiling look higher.

4. Curtains should start at the ceiling

Curtains should start just below the ceiling, not above the window. This simple step makes the window and wall look taller, and the ceiling is perceived as higher. If possible, use a recessed curtain track (curtain pelmet).

Architect’s note: Proportion matters in furniture choice too. In a low-ceilinged room, low-backed furniture on legs, raised off the floor, leaves more space between wall and ceiling and creates a sense of spaciousness.

Perception is stronger than dimensions

Small touches make a big difference, especially in low-ceilinged spaces. Every decision, from curtain placement to the choice of light fittings, directly affects the overall feel of the space. For more on proportion and balance, take a look at our article making a home look balanced.

Frequently asked questions

Can a suspended ceiling be installed in a low-ceilinged room?

Instead of lowering the whole ceiling, applying a slim cornice or concealed light strip only around the edges allows for lighting without lowering the ceiling.

Which type of curtain makes the ceiling look higher?

Light-coloured sheers and drapes with a vertical fall, running from ceiling to floor, give the best results.
