As homes get smaller or belongings multiply, storage becomes the biggest need. But often the problem is not a lack of space, but space not being used correctly. With the five tips in our video, you can uncover storage space in your home that you hadn’t noticed.

1. First, learn to get organised

If your home is small and you really need storage, the first step is to create order. Declutter items you don’t use, group similar ones and keep frequently used items within easy reach. Boxes, baskets and drawer organisers let you fit much more into the same space.

2. Make use of empty spaces

Above doors, corners, niches, under windows… These spaces that look empty but go unused can offer significant storage capacity when designed correctly.

3. Dual-purpose furniture

Why did our mothers always want a sofa bed? Because it had storage underneath. Today, too, it pays to choose furniture whose underside can be used:

  • Storage beds
  • Storage benches and ottomans
  • Coffee tables and TV units with drawers

Transforming furniture also makes life much easier in small homes: wall beds, folding tables, fold-out work units and so on.

4. Under the stairs

If you live in a small house or a duplex apartment, the space under the stairs is very valuable. It can be used for drawer units, a pantry, a laundry area or a small work corner; don’t overlook it.

5. Floor-to-ceiling vertical storage

Ready-made wardrobes usually don’t reach the ceiling; they stop at a certain point and boxes and suitcases are piled on top. If possible, have your wardrobes built up to the ceiling. This eliminates dust build-up and visual clutter while giving you tall, vertical storage space.

Architect’s note: Reserve the top compartments of floor-to-ceiling wardrobes for seasonal items. Choosing a door colour close to the wall colour visually lightens a large wardrobe.

Frequently asked questions

How can storage be increased in a small bedroom?

A storage bed, a floor-to-ceiling wardrobe with sliding doors and a headboard panel with niches are the three most efficient solutions for small bedrooms.

Custom-made or ready-made wardrobes?

Ready-made wardrobes are quick and economical; custom-made ones let you use every centimetre. In narrow and irregular spaces, custom-made is often more efficient.
