In our previous article we explained what Feng Shui is. This time we share five basic rules you can apply in architectural design and home decoration. Feng Shui has many calculations and colour-based systems; the ones here are simple but effective tips anyone can easily apply.

1. The entrance: energy’s first stop

The entrance is the first point where energy flow begins in a home. The more you allow this energy to enter, the more freely it flows. A simple, clean entrance without scattered shoes, supported by a suitable painting and plants, opens up the energy flow at the entrance. For practical entrance tips, read our article on details that spoil your home’s elegance.

2. The power of plants

According to Feng Shui, plants with round leaves are believed to attract positive energy, while those with pointed leaves repel it. That’s why round-leaved species such as the money tree, rubber plant or jade plant are especially preferred in living areas.

3. Bed position

The “coffin position” you often hear about on social media is a bed layout where the feet point directly at the door. According to Feng Shui, the bed should be positioned so that it is not directly opposite the door. The ideal is a layout where your head rests against a solid wall and you can see the door diagonally.

Architect’s note: This rule also makes sense architecturally: a bed that sees the door diagonally feels safer and is less affected by light and movement from the corridor.

4. The language of colours

In Feng Shui, red represents passion, blue peace, green energy and renewal, and white purity. Colours should be used according to the function of the rooms: calming tones in the bedroom, energising accents in the work area and so on. We detailed the effect of colours on emotions in our article on colour psychology.

5. Light and lighting

According to Feng Shui, natural light is one of the sources that attracts the most energy. It is important not to block windows, to use light-coloured sheers and to let daylight in. In the evening, warm light sources such as candles or salt lamps can also be used as sources of energy.

Frequently asked questions

Where should a mirror not be placed according to Feng Shui?

The general approach is not to place a mirror directly opposite the front door or where it reflects the bed directly.

Can Feng Shui be applied in a small home?

Yes. Reducing clutter, keeping the entrance clear and increasing natural light are the most basic steps that can be applied at any scale.
