Grey is one of the most popular neutral colours for interiors. It offers a base that is both modern and timeless; but used on its own, it can make a space look cold and monotonous. The five combinations we shared in our short video are the easiest ways to liven up grey and give it character.
1. Grey + wood
The warmest and safest pairing. Wood in oak, walnut or teak tones balances the coolness of grey and adds natural warmth to the space. A wooden coffee table next to a grey sofa or wooden shelves against grey walls works in almost any style.
2. Grey + green
Olive green, sage green or dark forest green create a peaceful, natural atmosphere alongside grey. The effect is even stronger when supported by plants. Especially suitable for bedrooms and work areas.
3. Grey + orange
A bold but balanced choice for spaces that need energy. Using orange in earthy tones such as terracotta, cinnamon or burnt orange, as cushions, an armchair or a single accessory, instantly livens up grey.
4. Grey + blue / navy
Calm, elegant and timeless. Light grey with navy creates a strong contrast, especially in living rooms and bedrooms. For a softer effect, dusty blue can be chosen.
5. Grey + yellow
Mustard or honey yellow creates a cheerful but controlled accent next to grey. It is one of the pairings with the greatest effect when used sparingly; an armchair, a set of cushions or an artwork is enough.
Which grey?
Grey also has undertones. Warm greys (beige-grey, “greige”) work better with wood and yellow, while cool greys (with blue undertones) look more harmonious with navy and green. Before choosing a colour, observe the sample on the wall at different times of day. Frequently asked questions
Which rug goes with a grey sofa?
A lightly textured rug in cream, beige or light wood tones warms up a grey sofa. If you choose a patterned rug, repeat the sofa’s accent colour in the rug.
Can dark grey be used in a small room?
It can; but using it on a single wall or the lower section adds depth without making the space feel cramped.
