Classic, modern, boho, Scandinavian, industrial… We often hear the names of decoration styles, but it isn’t always easy to pin down the differences between them. In our video, our architect Sinem Kocabaş ranked ten popular interior styles from 1 to 10 according to her own taste. In this article we have brought together the main features of each style and her comments.
1. Boho
Close to nature, relaxed and warm. Linen, wicker weaves, plants and colours from nature such as orange and green are the signature of boho style. Ms Sinem’s number one, because it offers simplicity and naturalness together.
2. Scandinavian
Light colours, light wood, simple forms and functionality. It brings modern lines and naturalness together in a fine balance; in Ms Sinem’s words, “boho’s sibling”.
3. Eclectic
A colourful style in which different periods and styles are deliberately brought together. The line is very fine: when it’s done right, it produces homes like works of art; when it isn’t, chaos.
4. Modern
Clean lines, simple surfaces and function. One of the styles we design most today; it also works very well with classic.
5. Classic
Symmetry, profiled details, rich fabrics and timeless forms. Combined with modern style (modern classic), it sheds its heaviness and easily fits today’s homes.
6. Minimal
Calm, airy spaces where only what is necessary remains. Especially useful in small homes. For details, read our article on minimalist home design.
7. Rustic
A warm style where solid wood, stone and natural textures come to the fore. Ms Sinem prefers to use it in a mountain house or a winter home.
8. Retro
The style where the forms and colours of the past meet modern life. Colour harmony is very important; otherwise it can easily become chaotic.
9. Industrial
Exposed concrete, metal, brick and exposed services. It has a strong character, but because the materials are cold, its warmth needs to be balanced with wood, textiles and colour.
10. Avant-garde
Unusual forms, bold colours and experimental designs. Impressive, but it can be tiring for those who love simplicity and natural colours.
Can styles be mixed?
Yes, but you need to choose one main style and use the other only as an accent. Otherwise the space looks messy; we covered this in our article on details that spoil your home’s elegance. Ms Sinem’s own formula is: homes with soul, that aren’t tiring, that carry traces of nature and don’t go beyond modern lines.
