Minimalist design often brings to mind stark white, empty and cold spaces. Yet minimalism is the art of choosing, not removing: a living space with just enough belongings, free of excess, where natural colours and light come to the fore. Here we go into detail on the tips we shared in our video.

What is the minimalist concept?

In a minimalist space, every item has a purpose. As visual clutter decreases, architecture, light and materials come to the fore. The aim is to create a calm environment where the eye rests and everyday life becomes easier.

Choose functional furniture

When designing a living room, use furniture that is as functional as possible:

  • The coffee table shouldn’t be just decorative; it could be a model with drawers, storage, or one that lifts to become a table.
  • The TV unit shouldn’t be huge and heavy; a wall-mounted unit with doors and cable management lightens the space.
  • Built-in cupboards with doors close to the wall colour make storage invisible.

The same approach applies to bedroom and kitchen design. For storage ideas, read our article on creating storage space at home.

Colours that let the light in

Minimal homes favour colours that reflect or balance daylight, such as white, off-white, cream, beige and anthracite. The design should let as much sunlight into the home as possible: sheers instead of heavy curtains, layouts that don’t block windows and light-coloured surfaces all help.

Architect’s note: Lighting in a minimal home should also be simple. Reducing the number of visible fittings and working with hidden lighting and recessed spotlights calms the ceiling.

Minimal doesn’t mean boring

It would be wrong to think a minimalist home requires plain, characterless furniture. You can bring nature’s colours and textures into your home: wooden details, travertine, marble. This way you bring both the energy and the warmth of nature into the space. Few but high-quality materials are the essence of minimalism.

Frequently asked questions

Which colours suit a minimalist home?

White, cream, beige, light grey and anthracite form the basic palette; warmth is added with wood and natural stone textures.

Are decorative objects used in a minimalist home?

Yes, but they should be few and carefully chosen. A single strong object is more effective than many small pieces. Our article on details that spoil your home’s elegance will also give you ideas.
