Open kitchen or closed kitchen? There is no single right answer; it depends entirely on the personality, lifestyle and expectations of the person who will use the kitchen. In our video, we evaluated both options from an architect’s perspective.

Advantages of an open kitchen

  • More daylight: When the kitchen and living area are combined, light flows more freely through the home.
  • Sociability: You are not alone while cooking; you stay connected with the whole home, your family and your guests.
  • Spaciousness: Without walls, the space looks larger and flows better.

The downside of an open kitchen

The biggest drawback is odour. However much a powerful extractor hood reduces it, it is impossible to completely stop cooking smells from spreading into the living area. The kitchen also has to be kept tidy at all times, because everything on the worktop is visible from the living room.

Advantages of a closed kitchen

  • Odour control: Cooking smells stay in the kitchen.
  • Quiet: The noise of appliances such as the hood and dishwasher does not affect the living area.
  • A space of its own: Cooking happens in its own order, out of sight.

The downside of a closed kitchen

It is not a social space. The person cooking can feel cut off from the rest of the home, and small closed kitchens also get less light.

Architect’s note: If you can’t decide, there is a third way: a semi-open kitchen. A sliding glass partition or a transition created with an island offers flexibility and can be closed off when needed.

Which one is right for you?

If you have a more traditional lifestyle and cook often and heavily, a closed kitchen may suit you better. If you prioritise light, spaciousness and sociability, an open kitchen is a good choice. If you are thinking of removing a wall to open up the kitchen, always have it checked whether that wall is load-bearing; see columns and beams in renovation.

Frequently asked questions

How can cooking smells be reduced in an open kitchen?

An extractor hood sized for the kitchen, with strong suction and external venting, noticeably reduces odours. Placing the hob at the point furthest from the living area also helps.

Which makes more sense in a small apartment?

In small apartments an open kitchen usually makes the space feel larger; however, the decision should be based on your cooking habits.
